ইংরেজি বাক্য গঠনে আর্টিকলের ভূমিকা যথেষ্ট গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। ইংরেজি ভাষায় আর্টিকলের ব্যবহার খুব নিম্ন ক্লাস থেকেই পড়ানো হয় এবং সাধারণভাবে এগুলো খুব সহজ বলেই মনে হতে পারে। কিন্তু শিক্ষার্থীরা প্রায়ই আর্টিকলের ভুল ব্যবহার করে থাকে। আমাদের আজকের আলোচনা আর্টিকল নিয়েই।
সংজ্ঞা: A, An এবং The-কে Article বলে।
প্রকারভেদ: Article দুই প্রকার। যথা— Definite article ও Indefinite article. এক বা একাধিক ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝায় বলে ‘The’-কে Definite article বলা হয়।
উদাহরণ: I helped the poor boy, Shut the window.
A ও An Indefinite article. কোনো কিছুকে সাধারণভাবে বা অনির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝাতে A ও An ব্যবহূত হয়।
উদাহরণ: A boy is playing. A bird is flying.

A ও An-এর ব্যবহার
শব্দের প্রারম্ভে Consonant থাকলে তার আগে a ব্যবহূত হয়। vowel যথা, a, e, i, o, u থাকলে তার আগে an বসে।
উদাহরণ: a pen, a toy, a man, an apple, an orange, an enemy শব্দের শুরুতে vowel থাকলেও তা যদি ‘ইউ’-এর মতো উচ্চারিত হয়, তার আগে a বসে। উদাহরণ: a university, a ewe.
‘o’ যদি ওয়ার মতো উচ্চারিত হয়, তার আগে an-এর বদলে a বসে। উদাহরণ: a one-eyed boy. a one-hundred taka note.
Consonant দিয়ে শব্দ শুরু হলেও তা যদি vowel-এর মতো উচ্চারিত হয়, তাহলে তার আগে a না বসে an বসে। উদাহরণ: He is an honorable man. An honest man is respected everywhere. He finished the work in an hour. তবে hotel এবং historian শব্দ দুটোর আগে a বা an যেকোনোটি ব্যবহূত হতে পারে। He is a historian. I met an historian. He works in a hotel. Rafiq works in an hotel. Abbreviation-এর প্রথম অক্ষর consonant হলেও তা যদি vowel-এর মতো উচ্চারিত হয়, তাহলে তার আগে an বসে। উদাহরণ: He is an M.A. Mr. Mokammel is an F. R. C. S. He is an M. R. C. P. He is an L. L. B. My uncle was an S. D. O
A এবং An-এর বিবিধ ব্যবহার: অপরিচিত ব্যক্তির নামের আগে a কিংবা an বসে। উদাহরণ: A Mr. Hassan called me over telephone. An Afzal Hossain wants to met you. An Akbar helped him. জাতি বোঝাতে noun এর আগে a বা an বসে। উদাহরণ: A cat is a pet animal (any cat). An elephant is a big animal (any elephant). A cow is a domestic animal (any cow). সাদৃশ্য বা ওই রকম একজন বোঝাতে ব্যক্তির নামে আগে a বা an বসে। উদাহরণ: The footballer is a Maradona, I see. You are a Shakespeare of Bangladesh. He appears to be an American.
প্রতি (per) অর্থে a বা an বসে। উদাহরণ: He comes here twice a month. The train runs 60 kms. an hour. He earns Tk. 20,000 a month.
একক বা unit বোঝাতে a বা an ব্যবহূত হয়। Eighty miles is a long distance. A million people have been affected by the Sidor. পেশা বা ব্যবসা বোঝাতে a বা an ব্যবহূত হয়। My father is a doctor. He is an engineer. Mr. Habib is an advocate. What দ্বারা বিস্ময়সূচক বাক্য শুরু হলে what এর পর a বা an বসে। What a pretty bird it is! What an idiot you!
‘Most’ এর অর্থ very বোঝালে most এর আগে the এর বদলে a বসে। It was a most enjoyable program. It was a most interesting story.
Cold, cough, headache. temper, rage, hurry, interest ইত্যাদি শব্দের আগে a বা an বসে। He has a cold. I have a headache. He is in a temper. I am in a hurry.
Singular common noun-এর আগে quite, many, such, but, merely ইত্যাদি শব্দ ব্যবহূত হলে ওই noun-এর আগে a বা an বসে। Many a boy did well in the exam. You are but a child.
As, so, too. how ইত্যাদি adverb কোনো adjective-কে modify করলে adjective-এর পরে a বা an বসে। Habib is as tall a boy as you.
It is not so good an idea. He is too honest a man to tell a lie.
Abstract noun যখন common noun হিসেবে ব্যবহূত হয়, তখন তার আগে a বা an বসে। The Taj Mahal is a beauty (a beautiful object).
Any বোঝাতে কখনো কখনো a বা an ব্যবহূত হয়। He has not a friend to stand by him. I have not a bag to lend you. You have not a friend to give you guidance.
‘The’-এর ব্যবহার
নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু বোঝাতে The ব্যবহূত হয়। The rice of Barisal is fine. The gold of this ring is pure. The water of this pond is cold.
পরিচিত কোনো বস্তু বা স্থানের নামের আগে The বসে: I like to visit the Ahsan Manjil. The Ramna Park is a beautiful Place. I visited the Tower of London last year.
জাতি বোঝাতে common noun এর আগে The বসে: The cow gives us milk. The rose is a beautiful flower: the eagle is a bird of prey.
Material noun-এর আগে The বসে না। তবে নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝালে তার আগে The বসে। উদাহরণ: The water of this pond is pure.
The gold of Arabia is pure. The rice of Barisal is fine.
অদ্বিতীয় কোনো নামের আগে The বসে: The moon, The white house, The sun, The earth, The solar system, The pentagon, The statue of liberty, The Grand Conyon, The United Nations, The Trans Siberian Railway, The Taj Mahal, জাতি বা সম্প্রদায়ের আগে The বসে এবং veryটি Plural হয়:
The Bangladeshi are hard working. The French are brave. The Norwegians are peace-loving.
Road-এর নামের আগে The বসে তবে street কিংবা avenue-এর নামের আগে The বসে না। The bus is running along the Mirpur Road. We live in Rankin street. যেসব noun দ্বারা পেশা বোঝায়, সেগুলোর আগে the বসে: My uncle has joined the Army. He joined the bar last year.
বিশেষ জাতি বা শ্রেণী বোঝাতে adjective-এর আগে the বসে এবং ওই adjectiveটি noun-এর কাজ করে: The rich are not always happy. The honest are respected everywhere.
সাদৃশ্য বা তুলনার ক্ষেত্রে ব্যক্তি, স্থান বা বস্তুর আগে the বসে: Narayanganj is the Dundee of Bangladesh. Nazrul is the Byron of Bangladesh.
