‘Future of Bangladeshi Film Industry’ at ULAB
The Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) held a Roundtable Discussion entitled “Bangladeshi Films: The Way Forward” on July 23, 2009 at the ULAB Auditorium. Panelists at the Roundtable Discussion included Bangladesh Film Archive Director General Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Hossain; Veteran Filmmaker Kazi Morshed; Student Academy Award (Oscar) Winner Maksud Hossain; Digital Filmmaker Razibul Hossain; and ULAB Film Assistant Professor Juditha Ohlmacher.
The objective of the activity was to assess the current status of the Bangladeshi film industry and to provide directions as to its future. The discussants said that sex, violence and too much commercialisation in Bangladeshi films are the main reasons of its lack of acceptance among the viewers. They also focused on the lack of necessary facilities in local theaters. The discussants expressed the opinion that the Sensor Board has much more to do regarding the improvement of the current status of Bangladeshi cinema. Among others, ULAB Pro-VC Professor Imran Rahman, Registrar Khaled Khan, Professor Abdul Mannan, Professor Jude Genilo, Senior faculties and students were present at the discussion.
